Andrew Selway | Integrative Counsellor & Psychotherapist in Oxfordshire & Online.
Experience. Insight. A grounded approach
MY APPROACH
Understanding is important. So is moving forward.
My approach is integrative and pluralistic, which means I tailor therapy to you, drawing on a range of therapeutic approaches depending on your needs, preferences and goals.
Space to reflect and be heard.
Insight into patterns, emotions and relationships
Practical strategies for navigating challenges
Greater clarity, confidence and direction
Rather than following a single model of therapy, I work collaboratively with you to understand what may be most helpful. Some people want space to reflect and gain insight into their experiences, whilst others are looking for practical ways of moving forward. Most people benefit from a blend of both.
Depending on your circumstances, I may draw upon approaches such as Person-Centred Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFBT), Clinical Hypnotherapy, Mindfulness and Neuroscience informed approaches.
Whether you're looking to better understand yourself, navigate a particular challenge, explore recurring patterns, or simply create space to think more clearly, we can work together in a way that feels right for you.
THE EXPERIENCES THAT SHAPED ME
The things we learn along the way.
Like many people, my own experiences have shaped the way I understand challenge, growth and change.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent more than twenty years working in senior HR, talent and leadership roles across large organisations, start-ups and scale-up businesses. I also ran my own businesses, including an HR consultancy and a successful senior HR recruitment agency in London.
Those experiences gave me a genuine understanding of the pressures that can come with careers, relationships, identity, responsibility and change. I saw first-hand how capable, successful people can sometimes find themselves feeling stuck, overwhelmed or unsure of what comes next.
They also sparked a curiosity about human behaviour and the ways our past experiences can continue to influence us in the present. Often, patterns, beliefs and ways of coping can operate outside of our awareness, shaping how we relate to ourselves, others and the world around us.
Being diagnosed with ADHD in my mid-40s reinforced my belief that understanding ourselves is often an ongoing process rather than a destination. As a gay man, I also understand some of the challenges that can come with identity, belonging and acceptance. Whilst every person's experience is unique, these experiences have contributed to the empathy, curiosity and perspective I bring to my work.
Today, I combine professional and personal experience with therapeutic training to create a thoughtful, grounded and collaborative space where people can better understand themselves, explore what matters most, and consider what they would like life to look like moving forward.

NEXT STEPS
When you're ready for something to be different..
For many people, counselling and psychotherapy isn't about fixing a crisis or finding quick answers.
It's about reaching a point where carrying on as things are no longer feels enough.
From the outside, life may look fine. Yet something inside you knows there could be more — more clarity, more fulfilment, more confidence in who you are and the choices you make.
Counselling provides an opportunity to step back, better understand yourself, explore what matters most, and consider what you would like the next chapter of your life to look like.
Taking the first step.
You don't need to know exactly what you want to talk about before reaching out.
Many people simply know that something feels difficult, overwhelming, or different from how they would like it to be.
A free 15-minute call offers an opportunity to ask questions, discuss what has brought you here, and explore whether working together feels right.
A few things you may be wondering…
-
My route into therapy wasn't a traditional one. Before training as a therapist, I spent more than twenty years working in senior HR, talent acquisition, leadership and business roles, supporting people through periods of challenge, change and uncertainty.
Over time, I became increasingly interested in the human side of people's experiences and what often sits beneath stress, overwhelm and the pressures many people carry.
Today, I combine that real-world experience with professional therapeutic training to offer a thoughtful, collaborative and human approach to counselling and psychotherapy. -
My previous career gives me a genuine understanding of many of the pressures people experience in their careers, relationships and personal lives.
I understand how capable, thoughtful and successful people can sometimes find themselves quietly struggling beneath the surface whilst continuing to support others, meet expectations and keep life moving forward. Whilst every person's experience is unique, my background often helps me understand the complexities of workplace pressures, leadership responsibilities, business ownership and periods of transition.
-
I aim to create a warm, collaborative and non-judgemental environment where you can talk openly and work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
You don't need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Together, we'll create space to reflect on your experiences, better understand yourself and identify meaningful ways forward with greater clarity, confidence and self-awareness.
-
Not necessarily.
Some people benefit from exploring past experiences and how these may be influencing life today, whilst others prefer to focus more on their present circumstances and future goals.
Our work together may involve exploring your past, understanding your present and identifying meaningful ways forward for the future.
This is something we will shape collaboratively based on what feels most helpful for you.
-
No.
Counselling and psychotherapy are my primary offering, with Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy available where appropriate and agreed.
Some people choose counselling alone, whilst others may benefit from incorporating hypnotherapy as part of our work together. This is something we can discuss together based on your needs, preferences and goals.
-
I work with adults and young adults experiencing a wide range of emotional, relational and life challenges.
Many people I work with may appear to be coping on the outside whilst privately feeling overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted or stuck in recurring patterns.
Others may be navigating anxiety, stress, overthinking, confidence issues, relationship difficulties, life transitions, workplace pressures or wanting to better understand themselves.
